Packaging Projects Categories

These set of awards recognise excellence in sustainable packaging design, production and innovation. Packs will need to demonstrate a step forward in the market and judges will also reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials.

By entering any of the Packaging Project Categories, you will be required to submit sample(s) of your product for Judging. Full Delivery Instructions and Guidance can be found in your confirmation email upon completing your entry.

Alcoholic Drinks

The Alcoholic Drinks category recognises excellence in sustainable packaging design, production and innovation.

Packs will need to demonstrate a step forward in the market and judges will also reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials. The panel will take into account the design, material used and the ‘wow factor’ of the pack, and compare that with other alcoholic drinks packs available on shelfs. The shape and label of the bottle is important from a design and a sustainability perspective.

To win an award in this category, entries must meet the following criteria:

  • Material choice. Clearly state why the material has been used. After use is the packaging capable of being recovered either as energy or a material or composted?
  • Does the whole system (sales, grouping and transport packaging) use the minimum amount of materials to provide the necessary protection and preservation of the product?
  • What data do you have to back up claims of recyclability, compostability and/or reduced carbon footprint?
  • Demonstrate how the packaging project is making a difference to the organisation’s overall goals. Was the packaging designed as part of the product development process?
  • Does the pack have the accreditations and certifications enabling the brand/retailer to make its sustainable case?
  • Does the pack fit into the UK’s current waste management system? Is it ‘Widely recycled’?
  • The circular economy. Does the packaging stand up to scrutiny against the key elements of circularity?
  • Changing behaviour. Does the packaging have a positive impact on consumer behaviours in some way in the context of sustainability?
  • How sustainable was the product it packaged. Is there a good sustainable story around packaging and the product?
  • Demonstrate that the packaging was needed in the first place. Could the product have been protected, and promoted in any other way, that rendered packaging redundant?
  • Provide any further data on sustainability within the packaging supply chain relating to this entry

In addition, judges will be requiring technical data sheets (in a PDF format) on the following:

- (If applicable) Sealing strengths, grease barriers, water vapour permeability, Oxygen permeability, Light resistance, Mineral oil resistance, puncture resistance all against test methods;
- Claims of certification (for example FSC, PEFC, home/industrial compostable), all regulatory claims and storage conditions.

For reusable/refillable entries, all packaging projects entered must be reused for the purpose it was originally designed for. Entries that simply repurpose the pack for another use will not be considered.

Ambient Food

This award recognises excellence in sustainable packaging design, production and innovation in the ambient food sector.

Judges will look over a variety of shelf-stable foods such as canned vegetables, canned goods, coffee, dry pasta, fruit, sauces, and tea and more. They will consider the sustainability credentials of the pack as well as how fit for purpose it is.

To win an award in this category, entries must meet the following criteria:

The judging panel will look over packaging which specialises in the design and manufacture of various types and materials of packs that are stored in fridges and freezers, as well as those featuring temperature controlled packaging systems.

Packs will need to demonstrate a step forward in the market and judges will also reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials.

Cosmetics

The Cosmetics category recognises excellence in sustainable packaging design, production and innovation. Packs will need to demonstrate a step forward in the market – it will be crucial to balance attractive pack designs with choice of materials and recycling.

The judging panel will examine powders, liquids and creams stored in plastic or glass bottles, pouches, and all forms that will allow safe and convenient use.

Judges will reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials.

The electronic goods & multimedia category recognises excellence in sustainable packaging design, production and innovation.

Packs will need to demonstrate a step forward in the market and judges will also reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials.

Judges will consider aspects such as custom packaging to tailor the pack to the product's specific needs and dimensions, shock absorption, and branding to communicate to consumers.

This category is looking for sustainable innovation in the foodservice/food-on-the-go markets. Material choice and product protection will be major factors when being judged, along with ease of use and design.

Judges will reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials.

Judges will look at design, ease of opening, labelling and sturdiness for protection.
Your pack will need to demonstrate a step forward in the market. Judges will also reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials.

Online Retail including Clothing

The Online Retail category includes clothing – a huge part of the fashion market in the last 10 years, especially since the Covid pandemic.

The category recognises excellence in sustainable packaging design, production and innovation.

Packs will need to demonstrate a step forward in the market and judges will also reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials.

Judges will consider aspects such as custom packaging to tailor the pack to the product's specific needs and dimensions, shock absorption, and branding to communicate to consumers, and the ‘packaging experience’ and ‘box-opening experience’ – an important part of online retailing, which can influence whether a consumer keeps or returns the product.

Judges may also assess the carbon footprint improvements of the huge issue of returns in this category.

This will feature creams, lotions, powders and oils, as well as gels and waxes.

The award for Pet Food recognises excellence in sustainable packaging design, production and innovation.

Judges will be keen to see entries that both defend the traditional metal can packaging associated with petfood, as well as those brands/converters advocating for the shift towards pouches and other materials.

  • Full breakdown on materials and weights/thickness of each component.
  • (If applicable) Sealing strengths, grease barriers, water vapour permeability, Oxygen permeability, Light resistance, Mineral oil resistance, puncture resistance all against test methods.
  • Claims of certification (for example FSC, PEFC, home/industrial compostable), all regulatory claims and storage conditions.
For reusable/refillable entries, all packaging projects entered must be reused for the purpose it was originally designed for. Entries that simply repurpose the pack for another use will not be considered.

Snacks and Confectionery

A huge everyday category, this award recognises excellence in sustainable packaging design, production and innovation.

While judges will be looking for recyclability features of the most common snacks and confectionery packaging which is flexible packaging, particularly plastic such as bags, pouches, and films, paper, alternatives are challenging this space with their own versatility, durability, and cost-effectiveness credentials.
Packs will need to demonstrate a step forward in the market and judges will also reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials.

  • Material choice. Clearly state why the material has been used. After use is the packaging capable of being recycled or recovered either as energy or composted?
  • Does the whole system (sales, grouping and transport packaging) use the minimum amount of materials to provide the necessary protection and preservation of the product?
  • What data do you have to back up claims of recyclability, reduced carbon footprint and/or compostability?
  • Demonstrate how the packaging project is making a difference to the organisation’s overall goals. Was the packaging designed as part of the product development process?
  • Does the pack have the accreditations and certifications enabling the brand/retailer to make its sustainable case?
  • Does the pack fit into the UK’s current waste management system? Is it ‘Widely recycled’?

Soft Drinks

A huge everyday category, the Soft Drinks award recognises excellence in sustainable packaging design, production and innovation.

While recycled aluminium cans are often seen as the benchmark for environmentally friendly packaging for drinks, judges will consider all materials and urge entries from recycled plastic pack providers as well as glass. Indeed, the 2024 winner was a plastic bottle.

Judges will consider a variety of soft drinks packaging, including design, easy of use, labelling, and the trend of multi-packs moving away from plastic to cardboard packs.

Packs will need to demonstrate a step forward in the market. Judges will also reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials.
